Implementing Electronic Prescribe (eRx) solutions for Healthcare Providers

Posted on March 25, 2015 | Categories: eRx | Posted by: admin

Implementing Electronic Prescribe (eRx) solutions for Healthcare Providers

Attention PrescribersBeginning March 27, 2016, NY State mandate that all practitioners prescribe electronically for both Controlled and Non-Controlled substances.

What is Electronic Prescribing?

  • “e-Prescribing” is the creation of a prescription in a secure electronic system, which is electronically signed by the prescriber and electronically transmitted directly to a pharmacist.

What is the difference between the nomenclature of ePrescribing (eRx) and EPCS?

  • e-Prescribing or “eRx” is used for non-controlled substances
  • EPCS is for Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances

What do you need as a Prescriber?

  • Active NYS License
  • NPI Number
  • DEA Number (required for prescribing of controlled substances)

Prescribers with an institutional DEA (e.g., Residents) are eligible for e-prescribing of both controlled and non-controlled substances. Residents with multiple DEA’s should use the DEA issued by the primary location of their residency program. Those without a DEA will qualify for e-prescribing of non-controlled substances only.

Will disciplinary action be taken in cases of non-compliance?

  • Compliance is required. Should a site/provider be deemed ill-prepared or not making a good faith attempt, penalties such as fines/audits/charges of misconduct could apply.

e-Prescribe for Non-Controlled Substances

  • The (non-controlled) registration process for providers for the majority of the clinical systems is a technical/programmatic task that your respective IT Application support teams should be able to accommodate.   If you are not on any EMR System, then we will help you get DrFirst Standalone system to manage your compliance & business needs.

e-Prescribe for Controlled Substances

  • Complete the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE) paper form
  • Obtain a Token for 2-factor authentication for controlled substances. Reach out to us for more information on how to obtain the token.
  • Register the token with your Software Vendor / Application Vendor i.e. AllScripts – Sunrise (SCM), AEHR (Touchworks), EDIS; McKesson, DrFirst. If you are Paper based then we will recommend implementing AllScripts or DrFirst EMR cum eRx solution

ePrescribe Key Words – mostly applicable to New York State

  • BNE Registration – Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE)
  • ROPES facility – Registration for Official Prescriptions and E-prescribing Systems
  • HCS – Health Commerce System

Workflows

  • Registration Workflow
  • Token Workflow
  • Triage/Nurse Workflow
  • Physicians Workflow
    • Document Encounter, history of present illness, family history, etc.
